Protecting dental health of children with special needs

Dental health, unfortunately, has been one of the most neglected spheres in India by health planners. This becomes all the more evident when we talk about the oral health of children with special needs as their critical needs form a priority and everything else takes a backseat until dental hygiene becomes a critical requirement for them. As a result, poor dental health has been widely prevalent among children with special needs.

Special health care needs are defined as “any physical, developmental, mental, sensory, behavioral, cognitive, or emotional impairment or limiting condition that requires medical management, health care intervention, and/or use of specialized services or programs, according to American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD).

The condition may be congenital, developmental, or acquired through disease, trauma, or environmental cause and may pose limitations in performing daily self-maintenance activities or substantial limitations in major life activity.

MedPiper Technologies, JournoMed and Daffodil Health are conducting a webinar to create awareness about dental care for children with special needs.
