Introduction to Samrakshan and Pre-eclampsia Pathophysiology

Pre-eclampsia is a gestational complication observed during the 2nd trimester. During this condition, an injury occurs to maternal endothelium which causes placentric dysfunction. This might result in increased vascular permeability and maternal systemic hypertension.

During placentation, implantation occurs at early stage of 6-12 weeks, followed by trophoblast initiation invasion, the uteroplacental perfusion is observed in between 11-14 weeks and the conclusion of the trophoblast invasion occurs between 19-20 weeks of fetal growth. In pre-eclampsia, a defective implantation of the fetus might occur which results in the pregnancy complications and fetal growth restrictions all of which might hinder the growth of the healthy fetus. So, it is advisable for women to be careful during their pregnancy stage i.e. starting from the fetal development stage.

Many Indian Women are not aware of this pre-eclampsia condition. So Samrakshan, a national project is leading an awareness campaign among women by conducting a Webinar officially and by gathering the eminent radiologists who would guide the pregnant women regarding the pre partum and the postpartum complications.

About Samrakshan:

Samrakshan as the name suggests “it’s protecting a fetus inside the mother’s womb”. Samrakshan is a National Project designed in association with Indian Radiological and Imaging Association (IRIA). It’s primary goal is to reduce the perinatal mortality rate in India through a systematic and a constructive approach that guides the radiologists among India to perform the doppler and Ultrasound scans to identify the complications involved in the pregnancy. The scans were recommended during the 3rd and the 8th month of pregnancy for pregnant women.

Dr. Rijo Mathew Choorakuttil was the first national coordinator who initiated this project in association with IRIA. Samrakshan has designed a protocol based management for determining the risks involved in pre-eclampsia and the fetal growth restrictions that are more prevalent in pregnant women.
