Increase In Mental Health Issues Among the Young Generation

Young adults are facing an increase in mental health issues which is major cause of worry. People blame social media, increased digitalization over the past decade, and several other reasons such as changes in cultural trends that may drive this issue. Researchers also state that these cultural changes over the last decade have a strong impact on the .

Mental health problems constitutes for a large proportion of overall disability in society. Treating mental health problems is every doctor’s responsibility and it should be given the same priority as that physical health.

Emerging need of targeting mental health among young people

Among the various mental health issues, the most common ones young adults are facing are:

  • ADHD 9.8% (approximately 6.0 million)
  • Anxiety 9.4% (approximately 5.8 million)
  • Behavior problems 8.9% (approximately 5.5 million)
  • Depression 4.4% (approximately 2.7 million)

Causes of mental health disorders among youngsters

  • Biological Factor– Biological health refers to anything physical that can cause anything damage to a person’s mental health, which has a long history of biologically based events. It this normal that all the emotions such as sadness, fear, anger, etc originate in the brain. Apart from this many other biological factors are there which contribute to mental health are-
  • Genetic factors– genetic factors have been shown to play a significant role to govern organic changes in the brain which can predispose an adolescent to diagnose schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s disease. Genes may also lead to abnormalities in adolescent development such as chromosomal deletion and mutation, it also increases a person’s susceptibility to depression, stress and anxiety.
  • Brain injury– any injury can cause mental illness in a person as the brain is the control center of the nervous system and the body. Head trauma can cause injury to the brain as well as brain tumors.
  • Prenatal damage– any injury or damage that occurs to the fetus during the time of pregnancy.
  • Substance abuse– any long-term abuse may have a serious effect on mental health in adolescents. Many studies indicate a strong correlation between alcohol abuse and depression, while others show a connection between the abuse of amphetamines and anxiety disorders.
  • Environmental factors– Environmental causes also have a psychological impact on mental health but tend to be pervasive in a person’s life. Environmental causes of mental health in adolescents are typically at the core as a result of stress. The common cause of stress on adolescents are social stress, abuse or isolation, bullying, mental disorder, chronic illness, and an unstable or dysfunctional home environment.

How to overcome mental health issues.?

It is important to take care of mental health and get the most from life. Making simple changes to life and understanding the facts can help a person overcome them.

  1. Talk about your feelings- for better understanding, one must communicate and let the other person know how are they feeling. It’s also the other person’s responsibility to understand and listen to the person.
  2. Keep active and eat well- regular exercise can help a person to increase feel-good hormones which can help. Exercise keeps the brain and your vital organs healthy; it also significantly improves our mental health. A portion of good food and a good diet is equally important for mental health.
  3. Surround yourselves with people that are healthy for you, making your mind energetic and fruitful- it’s important to find supportive friends and understanding. People must speak most to get supported by their friends, family, and support groups.
  4. Know the warning signs and educate yourselves about mental illness – it is difficult to understand that a person is having a certain mental health disorder but to understand a person by his or her non-verbal behavior is a sign must watch out. Learning everything about mental health is the step toward helping a person cope with mental health.
  5. Consult doctors and psychologists- one must talk to a doctor and psychologist and it should not be a question of shame. It is good to give equal importance to mental health similar to physical health.

Apart from this, there are various methods for dealing with mental health and the thing is what works for one person may not work for the other. Psychiatrists, psychologists, psychotherapists, and some primary care physicians carry out this type of treatment.


It is necessary to promote Mental health awareness. There must be an environment that respects and protects basic civil, political, socio-economic, and cultural rights that are fundamental to mental health. Mental health promotion should also be added into governmental and non-governmental policies and programs. In addition to the health sector, it is essential to involve the education, labor, justice, transport, environment, housing, and welfare sectors.
