Gender and Sexuality: What A Doctor Should Know

An official visit to a new doctor raises a set of new questions such as “Do you experience symptoms of nausea?” “Are you diabetic?” “Do you smoke?” “Does anyone in the family have a history of the disease?” However, questions on sexual orientation and gender identity are not present in every doctor’s list.

Many protocols and studies mandates doctors to identify the information on gender identity and sexual orientation. But the reality is that most doctors don’t dare to ask such uncomfortable questions that relate to personal information during their emergency visit or regular check-ups.

Sexual orientation and gender identity are essential issues which play an important role in determining a person’s identity. LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer) individuals often face challenges to access healthcare needs and they tend to experience the worst outcomes due to gender discrimination issues. Many of them face challenges of social stigma, violence, discrimination and rejection by their family members and society. Many LGBTQ+ individuals also lack proper education, are denied respect and also face inequality in the workplace and obtaining healthcare benefits.
