Awareness on Colorectal Cancer Screening and Treatment

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most prevalent malignancy and the second most lethal disease, with an expected 2 million new cases and 1 million deaths globally in 2020. Early-onset CRC is becoming more common. Despite there being efficient screening procedures, the number of deaths due to CRC is still high. Raising CRC awareness is vital for emphasizing the need for early screening and promoting good lifestyle habits that can reduce a person’s chance of getting cancer of the colon, rectum, or anus.

Screening is crucial since early CRC presents no symptoms. It can prevent cancer by identifying and eliminating precancerous growths (polyps), as well as diagnose the illness at an early stage, when treatment is typically more effective. As a result, screening reduces CRC death rates by lowering the incidence of the disease and boosting longevity. Most doctors advise adults aged 45 and above to undergo CRC screening.

MedPiper Technologies and JournoMed in collaboration with GEM Hospital & Research Centre, Chennai, are hosting a webinar titled “Awareness of Colorectal Cancer, Screening and Treatment” which will explore the complexities, pros and cons and test time intervals of various colorectal cancer screening examinations.

There are numerous approaches for CRC screening including visual examinations and stool-based testing. Colonoscopy, CT colonography, and flexible sigmoidoscopy are the visual testing tools for CRC. Faecal immunochemical tests, high-sensitivity guaiac-based faecal occult test (gFOBT), and multi-targeted stool DNA testing are examples of stool tests. The webinar aims to review the above-mentioned screening tests in detail.

Colorectal cancer treatment choices are determined by various criteria, including the type and stage of cancer, potential adverse effects, patient history, and the patient’s preferences and general health. Taking all of these into account, there are many colorectal cancer treatment techniques available, including surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy. The webinar will also cover each of these therapies and their adverse effects.
