A Webinar on Understanding Dementia

Dementia is a neurodegenerative disorder which is defined as an impairment of memory and other cognitive functions. More importantly, it is without an alteration in one’s level of consciousness. People with dementia experience personality changes and loses control over emotions. Many conditions can lead to dementia including Alzheimer’s and brain stroke. Although dementia is very common in elderly people, it is not age-related.

The early warning signs of dementia include memory loss, mood changes, confusion, failure in communication, problems in accomplishing everyday tasks, losing a sense of direction, and repetitive performance of activities and speech. Dementia is caused by a loss of nerve cells and is a progressive condition where the symptoms gradually worsen. The loss of nerve cells cannot be replaced and as more cells die, the brain shrinks which is visibly seen in brain scans. Each person experiences dementia differently and symptoms depend on the area of the brain that is affected.

Dementia can make a person’s life difficult but it can be managed with treatment and support. Getting doctor’s advice, having a correct diagnosis and treatment support can help dementia patients and their families plan. Currently, there is no cure for dementia and many of the diseases that causes it are terminal. Though the drugs available cannot cure dementia or brain damage completely, they may improve symptoms or slow down the progression.
