Understanding oral cancer to stop the augmenting health crisis

Data says that India shares the highest burden of oral cancer in the world, which is mostly associated with the use of chewing tobacco. Oral cancer impacts a very large population in India, especially the lower-income strata as they are easily exposed to the risk factors causing oral cancer.

Apart from tobacco use, poor oral hygiene and HPV infection and genetics are some of the other leading causes of oral cancer. Lack of awareness plays a huge role in the rising death rate every year.

We have seen several innovative treatment procedures and techniques which has made oral cancer treatable to some extent. But the state-of-the-art therapies are helpful only if the cancer is detected in time. Late detection can prove to be lethal.

Therefore, it is extremely vital to initiate intervention programmes to create awareness among the people so that they keep their eyes open looking out for symptoms of oral cancer.
